As with last year, we’re expecting Easter to look a little different to normal in 2021. But there’s no reason why it can’t be just as fun. Technology means we can still enjoy the big day together with family and friends. We just need to be a bit more inventive in how we keep traditions going. Here are a few ideas.
Party games
If the Easter egg hunt is an unmissable family tradition, then there’s no reason you can’t play a virtual version via video link. A good way to do this is to hide eggs at various locations in the corner of a room. Take a photo of this, then during the video chat, share the picture and see how many they can find, Where’s Wally style. It would be silly for the players to not reward themselves with a few chocolatey treats when they spot one.
Another good game to play virtually is scavenger hunt. Set around 10 tasks for the others to do as quickly as possible – open an umbrella, hold up a potato, make a cheese sandwich, and so on – and see who can do it the fastest.
Gifts
You can make gifts a big part of Easter this year, and watch your recipients open them via video chat. If you need gift ideas for your Easter Baskets, check out this post.
Presents can be varied, while still sticking to an Easter theme. You could send something you’ve made, such as a decoration for their home or some Easter-themed jewelry. Perhaps you’ve found something lovely in a shop, such as an Easter tree or a picture that depicts what the festival means to you.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with sending treats either, be they chocolate nests, bunnies or eggs, and it’s easy to gift Easter eggs in the post.
Cooking & Baking
You might not think cooking or preparing food is much of a virtual activity, but how about organising a Ready Steady Cook-style challenge, where you each have to prepare a particular lunch inside 20 minutes? You could have fun taunting each other and declaring when a culinary-themed ‘disaster’ has just occurred.
But it needn’t be a rush or a contest – it could simply be a chat while you all make hot cross buns, or a chance for the kids to mingle while making Easter nests and compare designs.
Video chat
And for those who don’t wish to play party games or have an audience when they cook, you can just enjoy talking and laughing with the people you normally spend Easter with on your laptop, tablet or phone.
It’s important to stay in touch with those you’d usually be seeing at Easter. We’ll all be missing each other, but there are plenty of ways you can make it lots of fun, and hope that next year you can give each other a great big hug again.
