One of my absolute beauty essentials is fragrance. When I worked for Estee Lauder, I was first introduced to the concept of a “fragrance wardrobe,” and met glamorous women who kept luxurious trays of signature scents on their bureaus.
Over the years, I’ve assembled my own collection of scents, and I never fail to be amazed at how a favorite or familiar scent can lift and completely alter my mood. Depending on the bottle I reach for, I may be greeted by a scent that makes me feel happy, calm, sexy…
However, there are a whole range of feelings that normal perfumes just don’t help me reach. They might make me feel extravagant, but none of the pretty glass bottles contain a potion that helps me think more clearly, feel more rested, or give me a greater sense of control.
Well, all of that changed when I added the Aromatherapy Roll-Ons from NuWorld Botanicals to my collection. Now, don’t get me wrong- these are “aromatic essences,” but they’re not traditional perfumes. The scents are strong enough that anyone you allow into your personal space will get a whiff and those walking by might briefly ponder the hearty scent hearty scent wafting by, but the roll-ons aren’t perfume.
They’re so much better. And, they’re unisex, which means that my boyfriend dug in immediately and covered himself in a whole variety of scents- which caused him to sneeze intensely after a few minutes. I immediately went for the Mental Clarity formulation, which I’m actually wearing now, and was pleasantly surprised. Here’s a run-down of the formulations and my thoughts on each:
Aphrodisiac: Contains Jasmine, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang and Patchouli. This one is a slightly heavy, musky scent that isn’t the sugary-sweet stereotype of a sexy woman’s scent. I found it to be a really nice break from the norm, and the dark notes in the formulation clung to my skin in a way that made me feel powerful and alluring- in a sort of Greek Goddess way! It was like burning incense except I got to put the scent directly on my skin.
Anxiety Relief: Contains Lavender, Chamomile, Rosewood, Sweet Orange. This one contains some of my favorite scents! Chamomile tea is a favorite when I’m tense, and Lavender has always been comforting when I’m trying to fall asleep. This blend was perfect when I became overwhelmed during work. It’s also a really great one to reach for during that time of the month, when you’re feeling just a tad cranky.
Crave Control: Contains Organic Spearmint, Grapefruit and Sweet Fennel. Those ingredients don’t sound like they’d smell great together, but it actually works really well. I’m not sure if it really had an impact on how often/much I ate, but I found that applying some during or towards the end of a meal was helpful. The mint smell was stimulating in the same way that chewing a piece of gum is after a meal- the mint triggered something in my brain that helped me stop eating. I’ve read about Grapefruit being linked to weight loss; there’s an article about it right on the product page that you can check out.
Energy Boost: Contains Organic Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemon. This is one of those roll-ons that everybody can use a bit of! It actually smells a little like a refreshing glass of ice tea, poured right from a fresh pitcher straight out of the refrigerator. I did find that it gave me a boost when I got slogged down in work on the computer- but not in an unhealthy, jerky way that energy drinks and capsules provide.
Immune Boost: Contains Tea Tree, Frankincense, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Orange Sweet. This is one that’s hard to verify the effectiveness of, but the ingredients are definitely ones I know to be helpful in health-related matters. The smell is also medicinal in a refreshing way- not a sticky-sweet cough syrup sort of way. Relaxing and head clearing!
Jet Lag Relief: Contains Organic Clove, Ginger and Nutmeg. I haven’t been traveling lately, so this was another one that I couldn’t exactly “verify.” However, Clove and Ginger are ingredients that I’ve relied in in the past to help me with motion sickness, and the scent was overwhelmingly calming. Considering the effectiveness of the others, I wouldn’t doubt the claims of this roll-on!
Meditation: Contains Organic Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Frankincense, Black Pepper. I love this blend! I used to do yoga, and I could totally see this being something I’d pocket before class. And no, the pepper didn’t make me sneeze!
Mental Clarity: Contains Organic Basil, Lemon. This one’s a great, spicy pick-me-up and another one that I reach for when I’m stuck on the computer for hours on end. I really like anything with lemon in it; the clean scent helps me immediately feel more organized and together.
Stress Relief: Organic Orange, Bergamont, Grapefruit. This one’s like a big bowl of citrusy- goodness! I don’t think you could possibly feel stressed out walking up and down aisles of fresh produce (unless you look at the prices…) and the same is true for wearing the Stress Relief blend!
Sweet Dreams: Contains Organic Lavender, Marjoram, Patchouli, Mandarin, Geranium and Chamomile. This wasn’t the first roll-on I reached for, but it was certainly the one I was most excited to try. I have a terrible time sleeping and often find myself up until it’s light out. Forget the pillow-sprays and warm milk, this has become my new before-bed go to! The blend is absolutely perfect and touches on all the scents that should be included for ultimate relaxation and dream promotion!
Sinus Headache Relief: Contains Hinoki wood, Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint and Eucalpytus. Whenever the weather gets muggy, I get a whopping sinus headache. I have a whole stash of products to combat the symptoms, but none of them have worked. This roll-on is my little miracle; it totally clears out the pain, and the mint/lavender combination relaxes me to a pre-headache state of bliss.
Sports Therapy: Contains Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint and Pine. This one came out after I received my samples, but the minty, refreshing blend sounds to me like an ideal combo for relieving stress and tension!
